CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for men
The practical one. Tools, not archaeology.
Fifteen minutes, no cost, no obligation.
What it actually is
CBT is the one most people have heard of, and it is the most straightforward to explain. What you think shapes what you feel. What you feel shapes what you do. What you do feeds back into what you think. Round it goes.
The claim is that if you can interrupt that loop anywhere, the whole thing shifts. And unlike a lot of therapy, CBT is content to interrupt it at the most convenient point rather than the most profound one.
It is structured, it is time-limited, and it has more evidence behind it than almost anything else in the field.
Why it lands differently with men
Because it is a toolkit, and a lot of men will accept a toolkit long before they will accept a conversation about their feelings.
There is no shame in that, and I do not treat it as resistance to be overcome. If the way in is "here is a specific technique for the specific thing that is wrecking your sleep," then that is the way in. Something being useful does not make it shallow.
CBT is also honest about scale, which men tend to appreciate. It does not ask you to overhaul your identity. It asks whether the thought you had at 2am was actually true, and whether you have checked.
What it is genuinely good for
The specific and the immediate. Panic. Sleep. The thought spiral that starts the same way every time. Avoidance, where the thing you have been dodging has quietly become bigger than the thing itself. Anything with a recognisable pattern you can name and interrupt.
What it is not for, and I will say so
CBT is not the whole answer, and anyone selling it as one is overselling.
If what is actually going on is a forty-year-old story about whether you were ever worth much, CBT will hand you a technique for arguing with it. Sometimes that helps. Often the story does not care about your evidence, because it did not arrive by evidence.
That is when we reach for something else. Most of our work draws on EFT and IFS, and CBT gets brought in when it is the right tool for the right job. Not as the default, and not as the whole plan.
