Referral information for physicians

Basecamp Therapy provides online individual psychotherapy to men across Ontario. The practice is solo, run by Jordan Wiener, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Most of the work is with men in roles that carry responsibility for others, where appearing to struggle has a cost.

This page covers scope, availability, fees and how to refer, so you can decide quickly whether a patient is a fit. You can read more about the work on the individual therapy for men page.

Appropriate referrals

  • Men presenting with stress, irritability, sleep disruption or fatigue where the underlying picture is psychological rather than medical
  • Burnout in professionals and business owners, including presentations that look like physical complaints
  • Anger and emotional regulation difficulties, including men referred at a partner's urging
  • Anxiety, including performance anxiety and persistent rumination
  • Depression in the mild to moderate range
  • Relationship difficulties, communication breakdown, and the effects of infidelity
  • Life transitions: career change, retirement, new fatherhood, selling or leaving a business
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Men who have been reluctant to engage with therapy previously

Many of the men seen at Basecamp are functioning well by external measures. They are often referred because something has become difficult enough to mention, not because they are in crisis.

Not a good fit

  • Acute suicidality or active risk of harm to self or others
  • Active psychosis or suspected first-episode psychosis
  • Substance withdrawal or anyone requiring medically supervised detoxification
  • Eating disorders requiring medical monitoring
  • Anyone requiring psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, or medication management
  • Court-mandated anger management or Partner Assault Response (PAR) programs
  • Anyone under 18
  • Women seeking individual therapy, and situations where the presenting concern is not the man's own experience. (Couples work is available separately, where both partners are engaged and the focus is the relationship between them.)

If you are uncertain whether a patient is a fit, a short call is usually faster than a referral that needs to be redirected.

How to refer

  • There is no referral form and no paperwork.
  • Give the patient the website and phone number. They book a free 15-minute consultation themselves, usually online.
  • Or contact Jordan directly if you would like to discuss a patient before referring, or if the patient would prefer you make the first contact.

What happens after you refer

  • If you let the patient know you have suggested Basecamp, they book a free 15-minute consultation directly, so the first contact is theirs to make.
  • Jordan does not share session content or clinical notes. If you need confirmation that a patient has connected, or any information about their care, that is arranged directly with the patient and shared only with their written consent and through an appropriate secure method.
  • If at an initial consultation the presentation falls outside scope, Jordan will suggest where the patient might be better served.
